What is a Family Advocate?
This volunteer position can be filled by either an individual, group or couple. Your responsibilities as an Advocate will begin once a family is selected for homeownership. The Family Advocate's primary job is to be a brother or sister for the family. You will guide and support them as they complete their "sweat equity" requirements and prepare for homeownership. You will also be a member of the Family Support Committee, giving updates as to how the family is progressing and relate any concerns they may have.
How Habitat Works:
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry working to eliminate substandard housing around the world. Habitat houses are sold to families selected by local Habitat affiliates. Habitat homes are not given away for free. The homeownership component is one of the keys to Habitat's success. Habitat keeps the cost of housing low by using volunteer labor and donated materials. The emphasis on volunteers is another important aspect of Habitat's ministry. It involves people of all generations, economic levels, various faith backgrounds and all races, each one working together with the Habitat Vision. Habitat requires each family to put in "sweat equity" hours working on their own home or another family's home. This investment of labor, as well as a monetary down payment and the monthly mortgage payments, gives a family that sense of ownerships that is so vital in the continued maintenance of the home. It also underscores the importance of self-help and the dignity that comes from a hand-up, not a hand-out.
