HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Habitat's work is accomplished almost entirely by volunteers from our community. In fact, building our community through service is an important mission of Habitat. Whatever your skills and interests -- whether it's pounding nails, working in the office, baking cookies, or planning and organizing -- they can be put to good use! There are plenty of opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers.

Offer support by sponsoring a house or through a donation of money, services, or materials. We are proud to have committed sponsors.  Individuals, churches, and companies that donate money, materials, and services greatly extend our ability to build low-cost decent, affordable housing.  And, donations given to Habitat for Humanity of Nodaway County are tax deductible.

College Students - If you are interested in helping Habitat for Humanity and do not want to travel far to do it, why not consider helping Habitat for Humanity of Nodaway County.  It's a good way to give to a good cause right in our own community.

HOW MANY DIFFERENT WAYS CAN YOU VOLUNTEER?

Sample events include:  bake sale, a benefit concert, car wash, Christmas cards, garage sale/silent auction, gift wrapping, arrange a golf tournament, kidnap the pastor, truck pull, restaurant takeover, youth for hire, Homecoming theme, etc.

LIST OF COMMITTEES AND WHAT THEY DO:

Family Selection - This committee is made up of people willing to interview and work with families who have applied to become a partner family with Habitat.  The committee members will also have an active role in determining the orientation and home visit procedure.  These people will also check to make certain that the applicant families meet the criteria established by Habitat for home ownership.  Working with the Family Support Committee, you will find a certain joy making what seems an unobtainable dream come true for some of these families.

Family Support - People who have good "social/people" skills to work with partner families both before and after construction to be sure that the families know what is required in the area of sweat equity, to provide a record of that time requirement, and to help in the transitions of true home ownership.  These sponsor/advocate/friends may also help the families in the areas of budgeting and home maintenance.

Public Relations Committee - People who can write articles for newspapers, newsletters, and magazines and who like to work with the local media are needed for this committee.  Persons interested in volunteering to serve on this committee may also speak to church groups, services clubs, and local organizations about our projects and our mission.  People on this committee will help to "get the word out" for Nodaway County Habitat for Humanity.

Fundraising Committee - This committee needs people to identify and approach potential donors (individuals, churches, organizations, corporations, and companies) for either monetary or "in-kind" gifts of material, labor, property, or support.  This committee also needs people who can develop fundraising material and help with grant writing.  You will be surprised to find out how eager people are to give when they understand the principles of Habitat.

Site Selection Committee - People who are interested in identifying potential sites for construction.  This includes working with local government officials on acquiring land and lots for building, water and sewer hookups and working with the construction committee to be sure lots are "buildable" for a Habitat home.  Those who enjoy real estate would be good committee members.

Construction Committee - This committee is good for those interested in home construction.  This can include surveyors, architects, building code enforcement, carpenters, concrete workers, plumbers, electricians, and utility people.  If you would like to help us build, this committee would be great for you.
